Gutierrezia sarothrae is a woody herb. It has an involucre that is 3-6mm in height, taller than that of Gutierrezia microcephala. Gutierrezia sarothrae has 3-9 ray and disc flowers, while G. microcephala only has 1-2 ray and disc flowers. Both these Gutierrezias inhabit open or rocky areas that have been denuded, frequently by overgrazing.
