Haplocladium microphyllum is a small pleurocarpous moss that can be found on nearly any substrate. The stem leaves are long acuminate and very broad at the base compared to the branch leaves. H. microphyllum is distinguished from the more common New Mexico species H. angustifolium by papillae that are centrally located rather than cells that are prorate at the distal end. The leaves of H. microphyllum are also plicate at the base, unlike the plane leaves of H. angustifolium. Both species have numerous paraphyllia along the stems.
