Heterodermia diademata (Taylor) D. D. Awasthi
Cupped Fringe Lichen

Heterodermia diademata is a foliose lichen that is whitish to gray above and whitish below, with a lower cortex, with stocky white to black rhizines. There are no soredia or isidia, but there may be a light pruina. The brownish disc of the apothecia is overhung by rounded-lobed margins. There are eight two-celled brown-colored spores per ascus. Heterodermia diademata grows mainly on bark, and has a special predilection for gray oak. The photobiont is a single-celled green alga-- possibly Trebouxia. There are algal cells in the wall of the apothecium (lecanorine apothecium).
