Heterotheca subaxillaris is an erect annual. Unless disturbed or broken, there is only one stem from the base but some branching apically. The nearly clasping leaves are very aromatic and sticky if crushed. In fact, the oil is difficult to wash off. The rays and disc are both yellow. This plant is one of the first to establish in disturbed ground.
