Hygrohypnella ochracea is a pleurocarpous moss that can be found attached to rocks alongside upper elevation streams. The leaves seem to curve upward along the stem. The cells at the apex are obviously shorter than the linear cells at midleaf. The lateral basal portion of the leaf forms auricles with thin walled, inflated cells where the hyalodermis of the stem detaches with the leaf. The stem cross section displays the hyalodermis as well as the central strand. The anatomy of the costa varies considerably even on a single stem. The costa may be single, double and short, or double and beyond midleaf.
