Hylocomiaceae
The Hylocomiaceae are large pleurocarpous mosses that typically form thick carpets on the forest floor. In New Mexico, Pleurozium schreberi and Hylocomium splendens belong to this family. Pleurozium schreberi is found in the Gila, and lacks the stair-step growth habit and the paraphyllia that are characteristics of Hylocomium.
