Hymenoloma crispulum (Hedw.) Ochyra
Family: Hymenolomataceae (but placed by some in Rhabdoweisiaceae)
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Weissia crispula Hedwig
Dicranoweisia crispula (Hedw.) Lindb. ex Milde
Hymenoloma crispulum has been confused with H. mulahaceni in New Mexico, a fact that was finally pointed out to us by Ries Lindley. H. crispulum differs in having one-stratose margins and laminae, thickened rectangular cells in the lower laminae, and inflated alar cells. Both species have linear striations that appear to be papillae that can be quite numerous on cross section. After re-examining New Mexico specimens, all of the H. crispulum specimens we have thus far seen except the one photographed here have actually been H. mulahaceni. We believe that gemmae are present in this specimen (collected recently by R. Sivinski) in the concave adaxial parts of the leaf, but admit that we might be fooled by an alga.
