Hypnum cupressiforme Hedwig
Family: Hypnaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Cupressina cupressiformis (Hedw.) Müll. Hal.
Drepanium cupressiforme (Hedw.) G. Roth
Stereodon cupressiformis (Hedw.) Brid.
Hypnum cupressiforme is a pleurocarp with circinate leaves that are long acuminate.
This species looks very similar to H. vaucheri which has significantly shorter laminal cells.
Also, the pseudoparaphyllia are different. Pseudoparaphyllia are microscopic structures that surround
the branch buds on stems of some pleurocarps. The pseudoparaphyllia of H. vaucheri are foliose (more than three cells wide
above the base) while the pseudoparaphyllia of H. cupressiforme are filiform--one cell thick
above the base (where they can be 3 cells wide).
