Hypnum vaucheri resembles H. cupressiforme and some authors have considered it to be synonymous with that taxon. Here we will consider it a separate taxon, differing from H. cupressiforme in having broader leaves, more chlorophyllose alar cells, and central laminar cells that are 25-40 microns long rather than 50-100 microns as in H. cupressiforme. The lower stem leaves of H. vaucheri are brownish. The pseudoparaphyllia of H. cupressiforme are filiform, while those of H. vaucheri are foliose. Both taxa are found in moist middle to upper elevation forest.
