Leptostomopsis nivea (Bescherelle) J. R. Spence

Family: Bryaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Brachymenium niveum Bescherelle

Leptostomopsis nivea is best recognized among the Bryaceae by its long, hyaline awn that can be as long or longer than the lamina. It is found in clumps on tree trunks in Mexico. Per FNA this species has distal laminal cells that are 4-6:1 with thick walls that are somewhat sinuate. The is species has not yet been found in New Mexico but is similar to L. systylia which has been found here and is so far known from one collection by Stark & Castetter.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp & Dina Clark for loaning us this specimen for photography.
