Lophozia collaris (Martius) Dumortier
Family: Lophoziaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Mesoptychia collaris (Nees) L. Söderstr. & Váňa
Jungermannia collaris Nees
Lophozia collaris, like the very similar Leiocolea badensis, has two-lobed leaves with a relatively shallow sinus between the lobes. Both are not complicate-bilobed, and thus have no lobules. The major difference between the two is the presence of
underleaves in L. collaris. These underleaves can have 1 or 2 basal appendages. The stems are so abundantly clothed in light brown translucent rhizoids that the underleaves are surprisingly hard to identify on L. collaris and must therefore be sought diligently.
Many thanks to the Duke University Herbarium and Blanka Aguero for loaning us this specimen for photography.
