Malacothrix stebbinsii W.H. Davis & P.H. Raven
(Stebbins's Desert Dandelion)
Family: Asteraceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
None
Malacothrix stebbinsii has small corollas that are about 6mm long and either yellow or white. There are only ray flowers, no disc flowers. The pappus consists of about 18 bristles and one awn. The bristles detach easily, while the awn does not, making the awn easy to see. The similar M. sonorae has two awns. Malacothrix stebbinsii stands about 12 inches tall. At anthesis, the leaves are absent to shriveled. Malacothrix stebbensii is found at lower elevation in dry areas. Gene Jercinovic identified this plant for us on the May 20, 2012 GNPS field trip to CBar Ranch Road in the Burro Mtns.
