Mammillaria wrightii var. wrightii is a lower to middle elevation cactus with bright pink flowers and hooked central spines. It has 8-15 radial spines. The ripe fruits are green or dull purple. In the past, Mammillaria wrightii var. wrightii was relatively common on dry slopes in town in Silver City. However, with development and unfavorable weather, it is no longer easy to find. It is very soft bodied and susceptable to rot, and therefore not transplantable. It is a short-lived cactus, usually just a few years with an occasional individual living up to about ten years old or so.
