Mannia fragrans consists of small thalli in spreading thick mats. The ventral purple scales have hyaline acuminate appendages. The spores are yellow brown. Both of these characteistics differentiate M. fragrans from M. californica. Although it is called "fragrans" the odor is not always present. Mannia fragrans is found in middle elevation Ponderosa Pine forest along seasonal drainages.
