Marchantia polymorpha ssp. montivagans is the highest elevation subspecies of Marchantia polymorpha in the Gila National Forest, recognizing that both subspecies can occur over 8000 feet in elevation. Marchantia polymorpha ssp. montivagans has a lighter green thallus and does not have the purple center line of Marchantia polymorpha ssp. polymorpha, and the stalks of the reproductive parts are shorter. Both are found at high elevation in mixed conifer forest in or near water.
