Mirabilis linearis var. linearis is an upright to decumbent herb with gray-green foliage and linear leaves. The flowers are bright pink purple. Mirabilis linearis var. linearis and Mirabilis coccinea are very similar. The best field character to separate the two is the very inflated, papery and veiny fruiting calyx of Mirabilis linearis var. linearis as compared to the small, uninflated calyx of M. coccinea.
