Odontoschisma denudatum (Mart.) Dumort.

Family: Cephaloziaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Jungermannia denudata (Mart.) Nees
Cephalozia denudata (Mart.) Nees
Odontoschisma sphagni var. denudatum (Mart.) Boulay
Sphagnoecetis denudata (Mart.) Trevis.
Pleuroschisma denudatum (Mart.) Dumort.

Odontoschisma denudatum, unlike O. sphagni, has copious gemmae-bearing stalks. The minute gemmae are single or two-celled. They appear white under low power microscopy but colorless at high power. The gemmae stalks bear reduced leaves. O. denudatum is paler in color, yellow green to almost white. The leaves, like O. sphagni, have a distinct border, although it is not as thick as it is in O. sphagni. In the fresh state, the laminal cells of O. denudatum have two large oil bodies. The trigones are swollen. In our 10-year old specimen, the oil bodies are no longer visible but the trigones are bulging. In the photos below, the nearly white liverwort is the O. denudatum, the light green one is not.
