Oxyrrhynchium hians (Hedwig) Loeske
Family: Brachytheciaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Eurhynchium hians (Hedw.) Sande Lacoste
Oxyrrhynchium hians is very similar to Eurhynchiastrum pulchellum, and indeed they have in the past both
been placed in the same genus (Eurhynchium). The differences can be subtle, but in the more obvious presentation, O. hians has complanate leaves unlike E. pulchellum. O. hians also has more widely spaced leaves than Eurhynchiastrum pulchellum. O. hians also does not have the obviously blunt and rounded stem leaves found on Eurhynchiastrum pulchellum. O. hians is much more common in eastern North America. It is typically found growing on soil or shaded rocks. We took our photographs of a specimen we collected in Iowa.
