Paraleucobryum sauteri (Bruch & Schimper) Loeske

Family: Dicranaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Dicranum sauteri Bruch & Schimp.

Paraleucobryum sauteri has circinate leaves that can be over 5mm long. The general appearance is very similar to the more common Dicranum scoparium. However, microscopically the two mosses are quite different. The costa of the Paraleucobryum can be seen to be much broader at the base and it takes up the entire width of the lleaf beyond about mid-leaf. The costa itself in cross section is made up of clear cells (hyalocysts) and green cells (chlorocysts). The hyalocysts form a boundary line on the upper surface of the costa and seem to alternate with the chlorocysts on the lower surface. The green color of the chlorocysts is lost with cross sections that are too thin. The long rostrate operculum is about 2/3 as long as the capsule. We found Paraleucobryum sauteri on volcanic rock.
