(Arizona Single Leaf Pinon)

Family: Pinaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Pinus monophylla Torrey & Fremont subsp. fallax (Little) Zavarin
Pinus californiarum D.K. Bailey subsp. fallax (Little) D.K. Bailey

Pinus edulis var. fallax resembles Pinus edulis is most respects. It is a midsized pine with relatively short needles found in lower to middle elevations. Pinus edulis var. fallax has only one needle per fascicle, while Pinus edulis has two needles per fascicle. Considerable disagreement exists regarding whether the taxon deserves species status or whether it is best considered a variety of Pinus edulis.
