Plagiobryoides renauldii (Röll ex Renauld & Cardot) J.R. Spence

Family: Bryaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Bryum renauldii Röll ex Renauld & Cardot

Plagiobryoides renauldii is a moss found on rocks in streams. It has a golden greenish color. The leaves on the main portion of the stem are rather distantly spaced, but they are more closely imbricate at the apex of the stem. The apex of the leaves is rounded or rounded acute, with the cells at the very apex being shorter than just below. The costa usually ends a few cells short of the apex.
As there is considerable discussion about what constitutes Plagiobryoides renauldii, I have placed pix of John Brinda's NM state record collection first. It may be that what we call Plagiobryoides renauldii is actually more than one species or highly variable, or perhaps misidentified altogether!

Many thanks to John Atwood, John Brinda, and the Missouri Botanical Garden for loaning us the specimen!
