Plagiochasma wrightii is recognized by its medium sized thallus, deep purple ventral scales, cordate shaped scale appendages and air pores surrounded by 5-6 radial rows of cells that are 2-3 cells deep. The sex organs are in a dorsal location in a row along the thallus rather than at the apical notch as in other Aytonicaceae.
