Platygyrium repens (Bridel) Schimper
Family: Pylaisiadelphaceae, formerly Hypnaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Pterigynandrum repens Bridel
Platygyrium repens has been identified over a dozen times in New Mexico in the past by several different collectors, and yet Reese made the statement in Flora of North America vol. 28 that P. repens and P. fuscoluteum are not sympatric in North America. P. fuscoluteum is our more common species in New Mexico. Whether or not they both occur here, or to what degree past ID's are in error, is not something we will tackle here. P. repens has more evident brood branchlets and the leaves are smaller, among other technical characters. We will neatly skirt the issue here by displaying photographs taken of what is clearly P. repens from Iowa. Platygyrium does occur in the same areas as Homomallium, but the capsules of Platygyrium are straight and erect, while those of Homomallium are curved and inclined to horizontal.
