Synonyms:
Polytrichastrum longisetum (Bridel) G.L. Smith

Polytrichum longisetum has a sheathing base and a leaf margin that only slightly folds inward over the lamellae on the costa. The margin of the leaf is serrate. The lamellae are entire, with marginal (topmost) cells that are ovate but evenly thickened. The median sheath cells are rectangular and 3-5:1 in length. So far, this species is known from one recent collection at high elevation.
