Pyrola picta J.E. Smith
(White Vein Wintergreen)

Family: Ericaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Pyrola picta is a perennial herb that can be recognized even when not in flower by its shiny, dark green basal leaves with the veins colored in white and purplish red petioles. The pink and green flowers are held above the leaves on a scape. The style takes off at angle from the ovary and there is a collar just below the stigma. The fruit is a loculicidal five valved capsule that looks like a chinese lantern when open. Pyrola picta is found in the shadows of upper elevation dark forests.
