Rhizomnium magnifolium has micronemata on the stems, cells that give rise to a wooly dense coating of rhizoids
all the way up to the youngest leaves on older stems. On younger stems, the micronemata can be seen to be large, clear
rectangular cells in rows surrounded by the longer thin cells of the stem. In addition, the margins of R. magnifolium are usually 2-stratose. The costa ends visibly short of the apex of the leaf and sometimes splits into two branches near the end. The leaves themselves are frequently nearly round or very broad and widest at the middle of the leaf, occasionally widest toward the apex (obovate). R. magnifolium is dioicous, meaning that only antheridia or archegonia are found in the reproductive stems of a particular plant, but not both in the same plant. Rhizomnium magnifolium is found near springs and along streams at upper elevation in the Gila.
