Rosa nutkana differs from Rosa woodsii mainly by size. The easiest field character are the large, frequently single on branches, mostly globose orange hips. The hips
of R. nutkana are 12-20mm in diameter, while those of R. woodsii are 6-12mm in diameter. The hips of R. woodsii are also more elongate and less globose.
Many thanks to Mark Widrlechner for ID'ing this plant letting me know where to find it.
