Salix bonplandiana can be a streamside shrub or a tree up to about 15 meters in height. The young twigs are red. The leaves are lanceolate and serrulate. They are green above and white underneath. The bark of mature trees is heavily ridged. Salix bonplandiana is found in lower elevation canyons in the southwest portion of the Gila National Forest.
