Sarmentypnum exannulatum (Schimper) Hedenäs
Family: Calliergonaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Hypnum exannulatum Schimper
Warnstorfia exannulata (Schimper) Loeske
Sarmentypnum exannulatum is usually found in boggy areas or fens, and frequently has red coloration along with
a base color of green. The leaves within a specimen are consistently about the same in appearance, but specimens collected from
different areas vary markedly in leaf length. The specimen photographed here was collected by F.J. Hermann in 1976 from
one area in Colorado, but another specimen (** see below) in hand was collected by B. Allen (#4394) from a different county in Colorado and has leaves that are much shorter and not falcate, and have a better defined alar area-- apices that are acuminate but not filiform and falcate as here. The stems have a central strand and a partial hyalodermis. The costa is strong, and the alar area reaches or almost reaches the costa even if it is not extensive.
Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, & Dina Clark for loaning us these specimens for photography.
