Schistidium canadense (Dupr.) Ignatova & H.H. Blom
Family: Grimmiaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Grimmia apocarpa var. canadensis Dupr.
Schistidium canadense is frustratingly variable. Within the same clump, plants can have a weak stem central
strand present or none. The leaves may be unistratose at the base, or at least partially bistratose. The distal leaf
can be unistratose or bistratose, with margins that are usually bistratose. The costa is percurrent and the margins are
recurved nearly to the apex. The plants can look nearly identical to S. rivulare. The saving grace is that the
capsules look quite different. The capsule of S. canadense is twice as long as wide and has long attenuate peristome
teeth. The capsule of S. rivulare is about the same length as wide and the teeth are much shorter. Other useful characters that may be present and helpful are the occasional presence of a chlorophyllose apiculus in S. canadense and the usual
presence of very sinuose mid-laminal cells in S. canadense. Both of these species grow along streams.
Many thanks to the Missouri Botanical Garden and John Atwood for permitting us to photograph this specimen.
