Sciuro-hypnum latifolium (Kindberg) Ignatov & Huttunen
Family: Brachytheciaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Brachythecium latifolium Kindberg
Brachythecium nelsonii Grout
Sciuro-hypnum latifolium is now placed in a genus which morphologically is scarcely distinct from Brachythecium. Sciuro-hypnum latifolium looks much like Brachythecium rivulare. Sciuro-hypnum latifolium has stem leaves with less inflated alar cells, little to no plication, and entire margins. Be careful to use stem leaves when called for in the key and only branch leaves when specifically required. Both Sciuro-hypnum latifolium and Brachythecium rivulare inhabit similar habitats-- wet rocks and soil at higher elevations.
