Sciuro-hypnum plumosum (Hedwig) Ignatov & Huttunen
Family: Brachytheciaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Hypnum plumosum Hedwig
Brachythecium plumosum (Hedwig) Schimper
Eurhynchium semiasperum Müller Hal. & Kindberg
Sciuro-hypnum plumosum should be suspected when looking at a member of the Brachytheciaceae with
darkened cells across the leaf base and a costa that rapidly narrows from the base. The costa
reaches about halfway up the leaf. The leaf margins are serrulate. The seta is usually rough,
but in the specimen photographed here, the papillae on the seta were spaced far enough apart so
as to not show on cross sections of the seta.
Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium, Erin Tripp, and Dina Clark for permitting us
to photograph this specimen.
