Brachythecium populeum (Hedwig) Schimper

Sciuro-hypnum populeum, according to FNA vol. 28 page 458, is recognized by "its combination of percurrent costa with opaque basal cells, unique among North American Brachytheciaceae." The margins are serrulate, and the apex is acuminate. The basal cells are short in an area 5 rows deep.
