Scleropodium obtusifolium (Mitten) Kindberg

Family: Brachytheciaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Stereodon obtusifolius Mitten

Scleropodium obtusifolium is a large pleurocarpous moss found submerged or in the splash zone of creeks. It is quite concave, and many of the leaves on slides may be split longitudinally as a result. The alar cells are enlarged and rectangular, but not as inflated as in the similar Brachythecium rivulare. The apex may not appear obtuse in leaves on slides by virtue of a rolled-under leaf margin. There are three collections of Scleropodium obtusifolium from New Mexico, but none in the past 35 years. Assuming it still persists in the state, it is not common in New Mexico. These images are of a specimen we collected in California.
