Senecio spartioides is a woody shrub to about a meter tall. The leaves are pinnatifid with linear segments. The flowers are erect and radiate (have both disc and ray flowers.) The phyllaries are not brown or black tipped as in S. eremophilus var. macdougalii and there are usually 8 of them (usally about 13 with S. riddellii.) The involucre is about 4mm wide (usually about 8mm in S. riddellii) and the achenes are pubescent.
