Stereophyllum radiculosum is a pleurocarp that grows on tree bark in tropical
lowlands, so it is not something one would expect to find in many places in New Mexico!
This moss is somewhat complanate. The laminal cells are described (FNA) as usually having
a "single papilla over the lumina on both surfaces of the leaves". On our specimens,
the papillae are low, indistinct, and not present on many of the cells. The papillae
are inconspicuous in both the usual microscopic (en face) view, as well as in cross sections
of the leaf. The two New Mexico collections of Stereophyllum radiculosum searchable on
CNABH are both over 150 years old, likely from the Santa Fe area. Our photos are of a
specimen from Florida.
