Symphyotrichum lanceolatum var. hesperium grows densely along streambeds with stems that have few branches. The rays are blue to purple and the disc is yellow. The leaves are long, wide and entire. The phyllaries and peduncles are pubescent, but not stipitate glandular or reflexed as they are in Dieteria.
