Taxiphyllum deplanatum (Bruch & Schimp. ex Sull.) Fleisch.

Family: Taxiphyllaceae, formerly Hypnaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Plagiothecium deplanatum (Bruch & Schimp. ex Sull.) Spruce

Taxiphyllum deplanatum appears complanate here, but apparently can also be homomallous. The leaves on our specimens seem to be flattened into one plane in other words. There is a short double costa or no costa visible at all. The leaf cells are elongate. The margin is plane distally, may be recurved proximally, and are serrulate by virtue of prorate cell ends. There are just a few quadrate alar cells at the base. The rhizoids are smooth, a character that separates it from other similar genera in the Hypnaceae. Pseudoparaphyllia are present, a character that distinguishes it from Pseudotaxiphyllum homomallifolium. Taxiphyllum deplanatum is found at middle elevation on boulders in mixed conifer forest near perennial water.
