Tortula muralis is surprisingly uncommon in New Mexico, given how widespread it is elsewhere in North America.
It has exserted capsules, a border of thick-walled cells, and a long hairpoint. No other New Mexico Tortula has
these three characters. It also has densely papillose laminal cells and a sporophyte with a peristome of 32 long filaments
twisted about one full turn.
