Trixis californica is a small perennial shrub that grows among rocky slopes on southern exposures at lower to middle elevation.
The leaves are lanceolate and toothed, and the yellow flowerheads are unusual in that each floret is bilabiate with two asymmetrical lips
with one larger than the other. The floral lips turn whitish as they age.
