Viola nephrophylla is found alongside streams at upper elevation in the shade of trees. The flower is purple, with the lowest corolla lobe marked with strikingly contrasting white with a purple apex and with purple veins. Viola nephrophylla is acaulescent (has no stem) and has rounded, unlobed leaves.
