Vascular Plants of the Gila Wilderness
Presented in Association with the
Western New Mexico University Department
of Natural Sciences
Yucca baccata Torrey
(Banana Yucca)
Family: Agavaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
By var., see Allred
This yucca has almost no stem. The leaves and flower stalks
are both near the ground. The leaves have twisted fibers on the margins.
The fruit is large and fleshy. It is surprising how well this plant does
at a wide variation in elevation-- it is found in the lowest desert parts of the
Gila National Forest and up to 7000+ feet in the mountains.
