Women In The Arts Series To Feature Rose B. Simpson

Western New Mexico University is partnering with the Mimbres Region Arts Council to host international artist Rose B. Simpson for the inaugural Edwina and Charles Miler Women In The Arts Lecture Series on October 8 and 9.

The lecture series event begins Thursday, October 8 with an artist reception at 5:30 p.m. at Light Hall Theater patio. It is followed by a presentation and lecture at 6:30 p.m. A 15-minute Q&A session will close the event.

Rose B. Simpson is an internationally active mixed media contemporary artist from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico. She will present her work and collaborate with students during a workshop on Friday, October 9.

The “Can Control” mural workshop begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9 at the entrance of the McCray Gallery. Rose and Watermelon7, an aerosol artist from the Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico, plan to introduce techniques and design methods for aerosol mural painting to students. The public is invited to attend to observe the workshop and mural production beginning at 1:00 p.m and to attend the mural dedication on Saturday, October 10 at 12:00 p.m.

“We are thrilled to present Rose Simpson as a way to kick off this exciting new lecture series featuring women artists from around the country,” stated Faye McCalmont, Assistant to the President for Cultural Affairs. “She is young, innovative, inspiring and pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. Students in Grant County will have the opportunity to experience her vibrancy first hand during our three days of events.”

Simpson studies at the University of New Mexico and the Institute of American Indian Arts where she earned her bachelor of fine arts degree in studio arts in 2007. She holds an honors Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Here work has been showed at several state, national and international exhibitions and many of her pieces are in several museum collections including the Heard Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, the Clay Center, Portland Museum of Arts and most recently at the Denver Art Museum. She is represented by Chiaroscuro Contemporary Art in Santa Fe.

The event is presented in partnership with the Mimbres Region Arts Council and the Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL).
