The Consulate General of Mexico, Western New Mexico University, the Mimbres Region Arts Council and Centro Cultural Mexicano Paso del Norte, are pleased to invite the Silver City community to a free concert by Klezmerson, a Mexican band that combines the Jewish musical traditions of Eastern Europe with gypsy and Latin American rhythms and melodies. This concert will be held on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in WNMU’s Fine Arts Center Theatre.
Klezmer is an ethnic musical genre that originated in the Ashkenazi tradition of Eastern Europe and rapidly developed in the Jewish communities of that region before World War I. Originally it consisted of dance tunes and instrumental pieces played at weddings and other family celebrations, later solidified as an independent genre with its own unique and diverse features. Currently, klezmer music is played worldwide and its essence remains virtually untouched.
Klezmerson
Klezmerson was created in 2003 by Benjamin Shwartz, a Jewish Mexican, as an innovative project that blends musical genres from around the world, particularly klezmer, gypsy and Latin rhythms, using elements of rock, funk and jazz.
The band is comprised of talented Mexican artists, Benjamin Shwartz, music director, viola, keyboard and voice; Maria Emilia Martinez on flute and voice; Carina Lopez on bass; Daniel Zlotnik on saxophone; Pablo Federico Schmucler on guitar; Carlos Metta on percussion and Carlos Mercado on drums.
Klezmerson has performed at many music and cultural festivals throughout Mexico, the United States, Guatemala, Italy, Canada, Sweden, and Denmark, among others. They have released five records to date: Klezmerzon (2005), Klezmerol (2008), Seven (2011), Klezmerson Live (2012) and most recently Klezmerson plays Masada Book of Angels (2015).
