Kappa Delta Pi Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Silver City NM -- Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society student organization at Western New Mexico University, will celebrate its fifth anniversary since inception, on Monday, April 7. A “Great Gabsy” themed dinner and dance will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Graham Gym. The community is invited to attend this event. No admittance fee will be charged; however, a $5 buffet dinner will be offered along with a cash bar. Attendees are asked to dress in their best 1920’s themed flapper dresses and suits. Board of Regents Meet For Strategic Planning Workshop

Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents members met for a strategic planning workshop on Friday, March 21, to discuss the university’s upcoming accreditation visit and the development of the ongoing Master Facilities Plan. The development of a new strategic plan was presented to regent members as the university transforms to meet the needs of future students and community. The discussion focused on the initial phases of the strategic plan and the drafting of the new mission and vision statement. “The mission and vision are who we are and who we want to be,” said Kathie Gilbert, Special Assistant to the President for Quality Initiatives. “The strategic plan is how we are going to get there.” At its afternoon public session meeting, the board approved the university’s new mission and vision statements as well as values and goals. Cesar Chavez Day To Be Celebrated With Music And Acting

Silver City, NM – Cesar Chavez Day will be commemorated on Monday, March 31 with several events at the Western New Mexico University campus. Known as a day of service, and officially celebrated in nine states including Colorado, Texas and California, Cesar Chavez Day events begin at 6:00 a.m. in the MEChA Building with fasting and prayer for education. Simultaneously, videos, poetry and discussions via an open mic session will take place. At 11:00 a.m., the Mustang Drumline will lead a campus-wide march for education and social justice. Marchers will make their way through several campus buildings encouraging students and community members to join. The march will end at the Student Memorial Building where a lunch will be served for $7.25. At 12:00 p.m., speeches and music from the farm worker movement will occur while lunch is served in the Mustang Dining Hall. WNMU Promotional Items Earn Recognition In National Competition

Silver City – Winners were recently announced in the 29th Annual Educational Advertising Awards. Western New Mexico University received four recognitions for promotional items in signage, imprinted materials, search materials and publications. Nearly 2,000 entries were received from over 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries.    Sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report, the awards are judged by a national panel of high education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and the editorial board of the Higher Education Marketing Report.    “We are pleased to see WNMU on the list of recognized schools for the second consecutive year,” said Mimi Clark, WNMU Marketing Coordinator. “The winning items where not only received well by the judges but they connected with our students and the community.”    Items earning recognition included a Gold award for a...

Mexican Higher Education Officials Visit WNMU To Explore Partnership Possibilities

Silver City – Several members of Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) visited Western New Mexico University on Monday,March 17, to explore possibilities of creating partnerships for Mexican students to study at the main campus in Silver City. A number of programs are of interest to Dr. Ricardo Duarte Jaquez, President of UACJ, who visited Silver City with five of his colleagues to meet with President Shepard and other members of leadership. Jaquez and his team toured the School of Nursing, which was of particular interest to the group who hail from a university that offers many similar programs in the health sciences field. First MUSEUM NIGHT Event To Feature Ph.D. Candidate Lecture On Bioarchaeology

Silver City, NM – Somewhere Between Indiana Jones and Bones is the title for the first in a series of Museum Nights offered by the Western New Mexico University Museum. Katie Baustian, Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, will present a talk on the subject of bioarchaeology and contributions to Mimbres research on Wednesday, March 19, at 5:30 p.m. in Fleming Hall. Baustian is conducting non-destructive analysis of the NAN Ranch Collection housed at the WNMU Museum as part of her Ph.D. studies at UNLV. Her focus is biorchaeology, an interdisciplinary approach to understanding human health and activity in ancient times. In this form of archaeology, ancient bones from humans are analyzed along with where they are found in order to reconstruct how people in the past lived and died. Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University is inviting community members to a public forum to discuss the ongoing facilities master plan. The forum will take place on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Global Resource Center auditorium. The plan outlays what the main campus will look like through the next decade. Community members will have the opportunity to provide input on the proposed plans to include renovations of outdoor space, parking lots, walkways and buildings. Teachers Sought For ‘Kids Kollege’ Summer Enrichment Program

The Extended University Department at Western New Mexico University is preparing classes for this year’s Kids Kollege summer enrichment program. Individuals interested in sharing their expertise in educational, cultural and recreational services are sought to teach classes for the program which will run through June and July. Most classes will meet in the afternoon. Students aged four years old to 16 years old will attend the classes. Individuals who would like to teach classes in sign language, sciences and physical activity are sought. 24 Club Awards Annual Scholarships To Local Students

The 24 Club recently awarded scholarships to two Western New Mexico University students. The 24 Club is a philanthropic, service organization serving Grant County for 70 years. The organization’s scholarship program enables it to achieve its mission “to be a real service by supporting educational, charitable and needy projects in Grant County”. The group’s prime objective is to provide scholarships for Grant County women who attend WNMU. Established in 1952, the original scholarship is a memorial to Betty Cook the first club member to pass away. It now serves as a memorial to all deceased members. The more recent 24 Club Christine Drangmeister Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of esteemed member/public school education Christine Davis Drangmeister.
