Birds of Chicago, a collective based around JT Nero and Allison Russell, will appear at Little Toad Creek, in historic downtown Silver City, on Friday, April 8 at 8:00 p.m.
The band’s music is described as having echoes of mountain gospel, street corner doo-wop and classical soul.
Born in 2012, Birds of Chicago has released three albums. Recently featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, the group is currently on its album release tour, showcasing songs from its recently released Real Midnight.
The group tours 200 nights per year and has developed a fervent following in southwest New Mexico having previously performed for the annual Pickamania! festival hosted by the Mimbres Region Arts Council.
Group members describe their music as secular gospel and NPR’s recent review added that the new album shows “us a way to fully live with the awareness that nothing’s forever and everything’s at stake.”
The Office of Cultural Affairs is sponsoring the event in an effort to introduce Western New Mexico University student to cultural events. Admission to the event is free to WNMU students with Mustang Card. Students will also receive a complimentary appetizer.
