Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents members met for a strategic planning workshop on Friday, March 21, to discuss the university’s upcoming accreditation visit and the development of the ongoing Master Facilities Plan.
The development of a new strategic plan was presented to regent members as the university transforms to meet the needs of future students and community. The discussion focused on the initial phases of the strategic plan and the drafting of the new mission and vision statement.
“The mission and vision are who we are and who we want to be,” said Kathie Gilbert, Special Assistant to the President for Quality Initiatives. “The strategic plan is how we are going to get there.”
At its afternoon public session meeting, the board approved the university’s new mission and vision statements as well as values and goals. The approved Mission Statement reads, “WNMU engages and empowers learners in a multicultural, inclusive, creative and caring community of teaching, scholarship/research and service.”
The board also approved Core Values and supporting language for the values. The six values include innovation/creativity, integrity, intellectual curiosity, personal responsibility, service to university and community, and student success.
“As we continue this transformative period at WNMU, we are excited to announce our new mission after much deliberation and hard work by the entire university community,” commented President Joseph Shepard. “I am grateful to our employees and students for passionately discussing and deliberating over several months culminating in the final language which I believe is very fitting for our university and the direction in which we are headed.”
Regent members also heard a report on the Facilities Master Plan and the university’s continued development of a multi-year plan related to campus landscaping, infrastructure upgrades and building construction.
