Specialty Cookies at the Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale

Visitors to the third floor of the Student Memorial Building this afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 12) will come across a sweet fundraiser. The Breast Cancer Awareness bake sale organized by WNMU’s Student Social Work Association boasts a table full of brownies, cupcakes, rice crispy treats, nachos and cookies baked with extra love. “I watched the baker sift ingredients into this cookie dough,” said Amaris Fay, the MSW student who serves as the Vice President of WNMU’s Student Social Work Association. Fay’s friend Myrna Collins owns an Arizona bakery and donated six dozen of her handmade cookies to the Breast Cancer Awareness bake sale. Whether oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip cookie, they sell for $0.50 each or three for $1. Half of the proceeds from the Breast Cancer Awareness bake sale go to support those with breast cancer, and half go to support the Student Social Work Association. When was the last time, or first time for that matter, you had dinner and a movie with the filmmakers? Uncle Bill’s home movies don’t count. Award-winning screenwriter Mark Medoff is coming to Silver City to screen his new film The Heart Outright on Sunday, August 6. The film's director Ross Marks will also be present. An Italian-themed dinner will be served on the patio next to Light Hall on WNMU’s Silver City campus. Diners will have an opportunity to meet the filmmakers. They will also introduce their production in historic Light Hall Theater. Mark Medoff is a playwright, screenwriter, film and theater director, actor and professor. His play “Children of a Lesser God” received both a Tony Award and Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play. Employers invited to register for Spring Career Fair

Western New Mexico University will be hosting its annual Spring Career Fair on Tuesday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Student Memorial Center 3rd floor. The event is open to non-profits, small businesses, and civic organizations that are looking to hire full-time or part-time employees. More than 20 businesses have already registered to participate. “More than 200 students will be graduating in May and we would like to have them stay in our community, hired by our area businesses, so that they can remain in New Mexico and make a difference,” said Vanessa Stroman, WNMU Career Services Coordinator. Charity project to benefit area homeless

WNMU social work student Nadia Justiniano is organizing a project to help homeless people in the area. The main idea is to make a group of volunteers from all around the city, to gather supplies that will help the homeless population. Items such as clothing, blankets, toys, medicine and canned food. The WNMU School of Education is calling for nominations for its Education Hall of Fame. "For selection to the Education Hall of Fame, the individual must have demonstrated a dominant interest in classroom teaching and devoted the major portion of his/her professional career to classroom teaching at the primary, secondary or higher education level" - Education Hall of Fame Charter 01/20/1987 To nominate a person, please submit the person's name, address and WNMU graduation date(s). Please attach a supporting statement indicating why selection is merited. Those eligible for consideration for selection to the Hall of Fame include bachelor degree graduates and the teaching faculty who are graduates of WNMU or its predecessor institutions. Students form search and rescue club

Mustang Search and Rescue, a student club formed in Fall 2016, was certified as an official resource by New Mexico State Police Search and Rescue on January 13, 2017. With this recognition, Mustang Search and Rescue team members became eligible to participate in search and rescue (SAR) missions run under the jurisdiction of New Mexico State Police. To prepare for SAR mission assignments, several Mustang SAR members obtained their NM SAR Field Certification on Saturday, February 4. Other team members will also be obtaining Field Certification in the near future. Under the SAR Act of 1978, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for SAR activities in the State of New Mexico.  The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) division of DPS is tasked with the management and administration of SAR operations.
