Star York is recognized as the premiere figurative Western and wildlife sculptors in the country and she will be featured as the next artist in the Edwina and Charles Milner Women In the Arts Lecture Series. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Light Hall Auditorium with a pre-lecture reception at 5:30 p.m. York has won numerous Best of Show awards and has been featured on several magazine covers including Southwest Art, which selected her as one of the most influential artists to have been profiled in 30 years. The Consulate General of Mexico, Western New Mexico University, the Mimbres Region Arts Council and Centro Cultural Mexicano Paso del Norte, are pleased to invite the Silver City community to a free concert by Klezmerson, a Mexican band that combines the Jewish musical traditions of Eastern Europe with gypsy and Latin American rhythms and melodies. This concert will be held on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in WNMU’s Fine Arts Center Theatre. Klezmer is an ethnic musical genre that originated in the Ashkenazi tradition of Eastern Europe and rapidly developed in the Jewish communities of that region before World War I. Originally it consisted of dance tunes and instrumental pieces played at weddings and other family celebrations, later solidified as an independent genre with its own unique and diverse features. A longtime artist and philanthropist has gifted a $50,000 contribution to the Western New Mexico University Foundation to establish an artist lecture series, promoting women in the arts. The Edwina and Charles Milner Artist Lecture Series is slated to begin in September of 2015. Mrs. Milner and her husband Charles gifted the donation to the University Foundation to provide public lectures of notable female artists as well as to create workshop activities for university students, public school students and the community. The gift is the latest in a lifetime of creating awareness, by Mrs. Milner, about the importance of women in art. “When I started painting after I graduated in 1953, at that time I felt that I had to sign my initials rather than my given name on my paintings,” explained Mrs. Milner, now 84 years old. “I don’t feel like that is the case anymore.” For the next 60 years, Mrs. Milner worked on her own art as well as advancing the awareness of female...

The annual Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) event is set to take place on Friday, March 20 and will celebrate the lives and writings of women, past and present. The public is invited to the Miller Library beginning at 2:00 p.m. to listen to at least 11 short readings by Western New Mexico University faculty and staff members celebrating well-known historic women such as author Mary Shelley and feminist Judith Sargent Murray. Dr. Cynthia Bettison, WNMU Museum Director, will highlight local female leaders with a look into the lives of prehistoric Mimbres women and Miller Library librarian Andrea Jaquez will give a presentation on the women of Fort Bayard. Early Latin American leaders will be discussed including Sor (Sister) Juana Ines de la Cruz, a seventeenth-century Mexican poet and nun.
