Students form search and rescue club

Mustang Search and Rescue, a student club formed in Fall 2016, was certified as an official resource by New Mexico State Police Search and Rescue on January 13, 2017. With this recognition, Mustang Search and Rescue team members became eligible to participate in search and rescue (SAR) missions run under the jurisdiction of New Mexico State Police. To prepare for SAR mission assignments, several Mustang SAR members obtained their NM SAR Field Certification on Saturday, February 4. Other team members will also be obtaining Field Certification in the near future. Under the SAR Act of 1978, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for SAR activities in the State of New Mexico.  The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) division of DPS is tasked with the management and administration of SAR operations. The Giving Tree: Giving back to those in need

Holidays can be challenging, particularly for those families with children. The Early Childhood Programs has found a way to help support the families in our program. We call it The Giving Tree and it is now available in the front lobby of the Child Development Center. The Giving Tree is decorated with ornaments detailing their needs. Renowned Sculptor Star York To Speak, Facilitate Workshop

Star York is recognized as the premiere figurative Western and wildlife sculptors in the country and she will be featured as the next artist in the Edwina and Charles Milner Women In the Arts Lecture Series. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Light Hall Auditorium with a pre-lecture reception at 5:30 p.m. York has won numerous Best of Show awards and has been featured on several magazine covers including Southwest Art, which selected her as one of the most influential artists to have been profiled in 30 years. Star will tell the story of her life and her discoveries through her bronzes.  Since moving to the Southwest in 1985, she has created a vast body of work that reflects her interest in the people, animals, environment and history of the region. Klezmerson In Concert At Fine Arts Center Theatre

The Consulate General of Mexico, Western New Mexico University, the Mimbres Region Arts Council and Centro Cultural Mexicano Paso del Norte, are pleased to invite the Silver City community to a free concert by Klezmerson, a Mexican band that combines the Jewish musical traditions of Eastern Europe with gypsy and Latin American rhythms and melodies. This concert will be held on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in WNMU’s Fine Arts Center Theatre. Klezmer is an ethnic musical genre that originated in the Ashkenazi tradition of Eastern Europe and rapidly developed in the Jewish communities of that region before World War I. Inaugural Gila Time Lapse Film Festival Sept 24-27

Films from around the world and the southwest will be featured in the inaugural Gila Time-lapse Film Festival to be held September 24 – 27 in Silver City, New Mexico. Desert Flower, filmed in Joshua Tree National Park, Jewel of the Dolomites filmed in northern Italy, and Light Study from Canada are just a few of the films to be screened. The Gila Time-lapse Film Fest is part of the 11th Gila River Festival, a yearly event that celebrates the Gila River, New Mexico’s last wild river. Selected films will be screened throughout the four-day event.
